I've been thinking about getting something for the times I got shooting out in the desert. It sucks trying to pick up 3-400 casings off the ground. Something like this would make it much easier. Plus it would make it a little easier to pick up everybody elses spent casings while I am at it. :) Anybody have something like this?
Something with a long handle would be nice so I don't have to bend over all the time but something short would work I guess.

Oh yeah, I don't shoot brass all that much except for my handguns, in my rifles its rarely brass.

Dude,
I saw the exact thing you want at the last Mesa Gunshow I sold at. It is basically a ball made of wires with just enough space for shell casings to squeeze through it's tines. That ball is hooked to a broomstick handle and the result is this thing picks up your casings and lets the dirt fall right through. Unfortunately I was so busy laughing at this guy thinking he was gonna get like $40.00 for one that I never got any other information about it- No need to thank me.

I've actually seen what you are talking about. I saw a video of it on youtube and it seemed to work okay. Not sure how well it would work in the rocks out in the az desert though.

It would and does work better than magnets out here. Arizona soil has a high ore content- a magnet would simply pick up the ground!

The rollers with brush thingys work great- especially for those of use who cannot bend like you young pups (or anyone who has actual bone in their backs.)

lots of magnetic tipped tools for pickup of medium and large objects on the internet. i think harbor freight has them. also, they make car mounted ones that are a long bar (we used to use them on the flight line vehicles). again google them onthe net. with this discussion I have started thinking again about getting some type of magnet for when I am sorting out the range brass I get (i get it in 5 gallon buckets and makes a pain sorting thru it).

that would work great if the desert floor were flat and clean. you would prob be picking up a bunch of rocks and twigs along with the brass.

i was up in flagg last sept or oct for a shoot, and nfa-user ( off the other site ) had a magnet on a pole and it worked great on all the steel cases and shot shells.

You can get the magnet on a pole at Home dipshiat.
might get lucky and one of the idiots working there might know where to get it, otherwise try the tool dept.
Or stop in at harbor freight pick up a welding magnet for the neg side of line and put it on a piece of conduit, all you need do is drill a a 3/8'' hole.
might even find a magnet with an eyelet that you can put a string/rope on and drag it around to pick up the goods.
Or hire some illegal to do the picking for you, migratory work or so they say.

While I don't doubt that it was designed by a Jew, I am not cheap enough for the task.

So I ended up picking up ones of these a few days ago and it works pretty good!
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/d ... mber=93950

It will pick up 15+ .223 casings and I could pick up about 10-12 shotgun shells if picked them up right. Sometimes there would be a couple .223 casings still stick on there even after I pull the lever, just tap them on the side of the bucket and they come off. I'm pretty happy with it. Makes picking up alot faster and I don't have to constantly bend over. This was out in the desert and I didn't have any problem with it picking up anything other than what it was supposed to. Definately worth the money.
